Studies of the gill, digestive gland, and gonads of a large mytilid from the 13 degree N hydrothermal vent site have led to insights concerning the histology and functional anatomy of the gill, as well as the role of this organ in the nutrition of the bivalve. From observations of the digestive gland, it is concluded that this mytilid ingests bacteria, as well as other microscopic organisms of hydrothermal vent and euphotic surface water origin. Histology of the gonad reveals that reproduction in this species is similar to that of shallow-water coastal bivalves. |

Suggested methods to reduce farm financial stress have included interest rate buy-downs and debt forgiveness. This study develops a method to estimate the proportion of individual farm financial stress attributable to an income problem, a leverage problem, and an interest rate problem. Of the Kansas Farm Management Association farms with a financial problem, 30 percent of the total financial problem is caused by an interest rate problem, 28 percent by a leverage problem, and 42 percent by an income problem. A reduction of leverage or interest rate to the level attained by the average nonstressed farms would make 31 percent and 32 percent of the stressed farms profitable, respectively. Therefore, in the short run, an interest rate buy-down or a debt... |

With the passage of the Dairy and Tobacco Adjustment Act of 1983, dairy farmer investment in product research, nutrition education, advertising, and promotion in the United States increased from $60 million to $200 million annually. A key decision faced by boards managing these funds is how best to allocate available advertising funds among the various dairy products. In this paper an economic model is developed that shows the allocation of funds among products that would maximize sales in a given market. The model is applied to the New York City market with results suggesting that over the study period diverting funds from fluid milk to cheese advertising would have enhanced milk-equivalent sales in the market by as much as 1.17% or 8.21 million... |

In wells of the islands of Barbados and Aruba (West Indies) two new species of Metacyclops were found. One, belonging to the minutus-group, is described as Metacyclops agnitus n. sp. and is closely related to Metacyclops minutus (Claus, 1863). In absence of complete descriptions of M. minutus, especially concerning absolute measurements, these are completed with observations on a West-German population. The other species, called Metacyclops mutatus n. sp., may have evolved from mendocinus-like ancestors, but differs obviously in comparison with the morphologically similar species M. aequatorialis Dussart, 1977 and M. chelazzi Dumont, 1981. A key for Metacyclops is provided, mainly based on the literature, as an aid for future investigations. |

The pricing behavior of the Florida celery industry under the current federal marketing order was examined by analyzing the implied market structure of the industry using a model proposed by Appelbaum. Point estimates of the oligopoly power index suggest that some degree of price enhancement above that which would be characterized by a perfectly competitive market may have occurred. However, the bulk of statistical evidence suggests that the departure from marginal cost pricing implied by the industry's pricing behavior is not statistically significant. |

A geometric distributed lag model was hypothesized as the structural relationship between purebred breeding bull price and economic variables determining the bulls value as a productive asset. Parameter estimates for the nonstochastic difference equation were obtained from a data sample including nineteen years of average price paid for yearling purebred Hereford bulls. Statistical results supported the hypotheses; expected bull price was responsive to calf price and cowherd inventory. An oscillating geometric adjustment pattern was found which reflected periodicity in bull replacement decisions. The general conclusion was that relevant information is rapidly incorporated into purebred bull market behavior and price adjusts quickly. |
